Top Ten Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Buy/Pick Up A Book

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and Bookish.

I am all about reading outside my comfort zone. I love reading dark and uncomfortable subjects like kidnappings, suicide, abuse, death, school shootings, drugs, traumatic experiences, diseases and so on. I also love well done romances and historical.

1. Novels that take place in very short time frames. (I made a post about these books a while back and compared them to one of my all-time favorite movies, Before Sunrise/Before Sunset movies--And now Before Midnight releases soon!!!)

2. YA High Fantasy

3. Abuse form a male POV

4. School Shootings

5. Narrator is psychologically troubled or traumatized

6. Unreliable narrators (even though this is hard to get from summaries, you hear about it in reviews)

7. Contemporary or historical fiction set in Paris or New Orleans

8. Road Trips

9. Disabilities

10.  Drug use and/or rehab-related

  1. OMG New Orleans YES! Such a good setting! I picked up OUT OF THE EASY simply because of it being set in NOLA. :)

    1. Same here! I would've picked it up anyway 'cause it's Ruta, but man did it make a great setting! :P

  3. Sort of tangential to this list but Before Sunrise/Before Sunset are two of my favorite movies of all time as well! They are both so real and romantic. I saw Before Midnight at Sundance and unfortunately it wasn't nearly as good, but it was still nice to catch up with the characters.

  4. I am never quite sure how one defines an unreliable narrator.

    1. One that you can't totally trust whether because he's not honest, or because he's hiding something, or simply distorting the truth. So the reader is left to figure things out by what other people say and descriptions rather than by what the narrator is relaying.

  6. Really interesting list. A lot of dark topics on there. Unreliable narrators certainly make for an interesting story. Great choices.

  9. I really love your list!! I am definitely into male POV books, school shooting books, and road trip books!! Unreliable narrator books can be cool too, but sometimes fustrating! I did NOT like Liar as Lori mentioned above... it was too much lying!!!

  10. YA high fantasies and unreliable narrators are both themes that I thought of for this week - but they didn't make the list! I should have added an honorable mentions list or something haha ;) But seriously - I love both those themes/words/concepts. Especially when it comes to Mara Dyer- type stuff. SO COOL.

  11. Interesting list. I'm not a fan of unreliable narrators. I tend to take it personally when I find out the truth... it's like I've been lied to by a friend!

  12. Hey there! I really like your list - I especially with the High Fantasy part. I was wondering, though, if you could maybe recommend a good novel that has that only captures a short time frame. I'm pretty sure that I'd really like that, but so far I've only read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight and was pretty disappointed...

    1. OF COURSE! Well, Nick and Norah is sort of the one that everyone thinks of first, but my favorites are Graffiti Moon and Gayle Forman's Where She Went. If you like verse novels, The Day Before by Lisa Schroeder. There are also a few I've read summaries for that come out this year! :)
