Just One Day - Gayle Forman

Young Adult
Pages: 320
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile
Release Date: January 8, 2013
When sheltered American good girl Allyson "LuLu" Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left. Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.

He nudges my ankle with his toe. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For arranging this." He gestures to the boat.
"My pleasure. Thank you for arranging this." I point above us, to where Paris is no doubt going about its business.
"Any time." He looks around. "It's nice, this. The canal." He looks at me. "You."
"I'll bet you say that to all the canals." But I flush in the musty, rich darkness.

Like a cup of sweet hot cocoa... So warm. So rich. So incredibly delicious.

And I felt the exact feeling you get when you reach for more cocoa, only to find the cup empty. You already drank it all. The thick, velvety flavor still lingers in your mouth, but there's no more, and it's not enough! Well, expect that and worse. This book will suck you in and envelop you in the story and leave you begging for more.

Forman is a true artist. She paints vivid pictures with her words. She takes you in an, oh so real, journey of emotions, of discovery, of profound happiness, and makes you wallow in the frustration right along with Allyson. Allyson has such a fine voice. A very realistic character that changes and grows in each page.

I will admit I almost threw a tantrum--five year old style, with stomping and everything-- about one third into the book, but after you accept what's happened, you enjoy the ride. Of course, I cannot wait for the next book and I trust the wait will be richly rewarded.

This was a journey and a romance that will remain one of the most memorable stories I have ever read.
