The Invention of Hugo Cabret - Brian Selznick (Book + audiobook + film review)

Middle Grade
Pages: 533
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Release Date: January 30, 2007

Orphan, clock keeper, and thief, Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks with an eccentric, bookish girl and a bitter old man who runs a toy booth in the station, Hugo's undercover life, and his most precious secret, are put in jeopardy. A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a stolen key, a mechanical man, and a hidden message from Hugo's dead father form the backbone of this intricate, tender, and spellbinding mystery.

The book:
This was a new and overall different experience altogether. I wish I would have read this as a kid. It's a story told in pictures and words. Artful and atmospheric, it opens up the world of Cinema and it's history to young readers while exploring friendship in odd circumstances. The book is full of mystery that Hugo and Isabelle try to decipher together. The setting comes alive with the pictures in a very effective way that I believe important for the age range because they still don't have the mental snapshots of the past like we do. The book is very short, even though it's very thick, because things are well spread-out throughout and images are plentiful. The illustrations were marvelous.

The audio:
I don't think they could have done a better job in the audio version for this book. I was skeptical of how they would manage to make the reader understand the illustrations while listening, but instead, it comes with the images in a separate disc and the sound effects let you know when to look for them. Not many audiobooks include sound effects, but this one did and they made the story come alive even more. On top of that, the reader was excellent!

The film:
I originally picked up the book wanting to see the movie. I'm one of those who just HAS to read it before watching or else I wont want to. The film was absolutely breathtaking. The story and characters, the setting, and even the additional stuff they added in, were simply amazing. What with it being a Scorsese film, it was slow-paced at points, a bit over the two hours, but ultimately a gorgeous film. Again, because I am a history geek. the early film images won me over big time. The camera angles and shots, the Paris that came alive, and the editing, made it one of the best book adaptations I've seen. Highly recommended.

Some sources (Thanks Katie and Kim) gave me two more books that will be movies soon.
  • Paper Towns by John Green (Mandate Pictures, 2010) - IMDB
  • Maximum Ride by James Peterson (I don't know how I feel about this.. but the director will be Twilight's director Catherine Hardwicke, 2010) - IMDB

Lisa McMann recently posted "Caleb's story" which is really good (FYI: Cabel's mine). You have to register to be able to read it.

Kelley Armstrong Twitted this morning the first three (3!!) chapters of The Reckoning. Its not out till May 1st 2010, though. And just in case you're a fan of this series (which I am!!) and you still don't know this, Derek has been writing part of his story in a draft called "Dangerous" on Chloe's blog!! We're on chapter 13 already so catch up! She posts a new chapter on the 15th and 31st of each month.

And in New Moon's news, the actors are already in Vancouver filming!

These are the books I know that will be becoming a movie:
  • Hunger Games (Lionsgate, 2010) - IMDB
  • A Great & Terrible Beauty (2010) - IMDB
  • Wings - (DISNEY- Miley Cyrus will be starring, 2011) - IMBD
  • Beastly - will be released on July 30th, 2010 starring: Neil Patrick Harris (Will Fratalli), Vanessa Hudgens (Linda), Mary-Kate Olsen (Kendra Hilferty), Alex Pettyfer (Kyle Kingsbury) & Director and Screenplay: Daniel Barnz - IMDB
  • Uglies - Westerfeld has been talking about the movie and "movie makers" on his blog. I don't know if its going for sure. (This one is quite difficult to do)

The Tempted cover is now on the House of Night website:

* Check out the super cool Prophecy of the Sisters site!

* Book 2 of Wings by Aprilynne Pike will be released June 8, 2010. The final title has not been selected.

* In case you haven't heard, there is a new Victoria for Eclipse, the 3rd movie of the Twilight saga, due to schedule conflicts. You can see the new Victoria here. Here is what Rachelle Lafevre had to say:
I was fully committed to the ‘Twilight’ saga, and to the portrayal of Victoria, I turned down several other film opportunities and, in accordance with my contractual rights, accepted only roles that would involve very short shooting schedules. My commitment to ‘Barney’s Version’ is only ten days. Summit picked up my option for ‘Eclipse.’ Although the production schedule for ‘Eclipse’ is over three months long, Summit said they had a conflict during those ten days and would not accommodate me. Given the length of filming for ‘Eclipse,’ never did I fathom I would lose the role over a 10 day overlap. I was happy with my contract with Summit and was fully prepared to continue to honor it. Summit chose simply to recast the part.

The good news I have is that Eclipse will premiere on June 30, 2010. So the wait will be much, much shorter!
