Pushing the Limits - Katie McGarry

Young Adult
Pages: 416
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Release Date: July 31, 2012

No one knows what happened the night Echo Emerson went from popular girl with jock boyfriend to gossiped-about outsider with "freaky" scars on her arms. Even Echo can't remember the whole truth of that horrible night. All she knows is that she wants everything to go back to normal. But when Noah Hutchins, the smoking-hot, girl-using loner in the black leather jacket, explodes into her life with his tough attitude and surprising understanding, Echo's world shifts in ways she could never have imagined. They should have nothing in common. And with the secrets they both keep, being together is pretty much impossible.Yet the crazy attraction between them refuses to go away. And Echo has to ask herself just how far they can push the limits and what she'll risk for the one guy who might teach her how to love again.

As a realistic fiction lover, I know what to expect when I'm reading certain authors. If you grab a Sarah Dessen, you know it's not all romance but some growth and discoveries. If you grab a Courtney Summers you know you're in for some tense struggle and world-shaking down-to-Earthness. But if you grab a Jennifer Echols or Simone Elkeles, you're in for a sexy steamy romance and then some. Somehow McGarry fused all those differences into one sexy steamy, tense and world-shaking romance with growth and discoveries, and surprisingly it worked. And it came wrapped up in my favorite package: Alternating POVs!

The characters were real and had very distinguishable voices. Even as the plot might be a bit foreseeable, the journey was sigh-worthy and exciting. Noah is perfect kind of bad boy that we all secretly (or not so secretly) dream we'd have. So effing dreamy! All the characters were unique in their own way. One of the secondary characters, Beth, was my absolute favorite after Noah. So I was ecstatic to learn that McGarry's next novel is Beth's story, so we will obviously get to read some more about Noah and the gang!

So yes, this was definitely one of those character-driven novels, and it absolutely rocked at it. If you're looking for an entertaining hot summer read, be sure to check this out. I'm pretty sure all realistic fiction fans will love this one, specially Simone Elkeles readers.

  2. I loved Pushing the Limits, too. I was actually kind of surprised with how much I loved it. I don't always enjoy books like that. I was so invested in both Echo and Noah, and loved jumping from Echo's POV to Noah's POV and back. I usually am not really into alternating POVs.

    Great review!

  4. This looks amazing. When I was reading the synopsis I was thinking to myself "I hope she liked it". I am adding this to my TBR as we speak.

    Thanks for the review.
