Finally got around to reading this one. I can see why so many people love it. It's certainly fascinating being able to see through Charlie's eyes and experience life and regular experiences through a somewhat particular perspective. Charlie is socially awkward and everyone knows it. That's not something easy to live with in high school. Especially since he doesn't even understand most of what goes on around him. This is his journey towards understanding the world, his life and himself.
Even though it's a very original voice, it never feels strange. Told in letters, almost like a diary, Charlie is very honest and special. I really enjoyed the very real characters and their lives. Patrick was my favorite character. You can just 'see' him somehow. I also liked how we never know his sibling's names and how there's a mystery left hanging after finishing it. But I didn't see the ending coming, and that kind of changed the story for me. Before that point I was a little bored and waiting for something to happen. After that I was surprised and awed that I did not even imagine this as an option.
Overall, a very different portrayal of a teenage boy that has quickly become a classic. Definitely one YA readers should not miss.

ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this on your list of books you read I was really curious of how you liked it. This was my all-time favorite book during high school (yes there was an all-time favorite before This Lullaby lol). I remember in one of my classes we had to read a poem from a book out loud and I chose the one used in this book. I really wish Chobksy would have written more throughout the years.
