Dear John

Pages: 352
Publisher: Warner Books Inc.
Release Date: January 1, 2006

An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life--until he meets the girl of his dreams, Savannah. Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love--and face the hardest decision of his life.

Every time I read a Sparks book I wonder, is it possible to read his books without crying your guts out? I mean seriously! I'm not a big fan of crying as some of you know, I almost never cry, but geez, this one brought insane sobbing--the howling, moaning, wailing kind of sob. Yes, extremely cathartic indeed. I wont be sad for a long long time now, ha! But the thing is, I don't think he is a excellent writer but I do know with certainty that he is one extremely talented story-teller. It's almost impossible not to feel yourself floating inside the story. His way of engaging the reader is utterly effective and astonishingly atmospheric.

I loved the story, fell in love with the characters and would love to read this one over and over. I found that the psychological part was really good also. That was my favorite character, John's dad. OMG, I love him! Nicholas Sparks is a genius and his love stories are epic. So of course, if you enjoy good romance, this is a must. And if you don't, I think you'll like it too. It's hard not to.

  1. You know I am not sure if he can tell a story with out making you bring out a bunch of tissues I cry EVERY time I see one of his movies or read one of his books...I love his story telling abilities as well...but man the guy can make you tear up!

  2. I bought this book when the movie came out, but never read it in time. So I went to see the movie instead - cried in the theater - but good lord did that movie piss me off! I've heard the book is much better, but I've been weary about it. Maybe I'll still give it a shot, lol

  3. Aw, I love Nicholas Sparks! His novels (I've ready only two) have brought me to tears every time! Dear John is probably going to be one of my favourite books...And I also loved John's dad! I sometimes felt bad for him. In the movie, I think the actor did a good job of playing him. But then again, I watched the movie first, which is a no-no. Anyway, great review! I love how you described his way of engaging readers. :)

  4. The only book I've ever cried during was The Last Song, this morning, and even then it was just one tear!

  5. Read all of his books and saw the movies, great!

  6. Honestly, I don't think it's possible. He always writes the same types of stories....girl meets boys...fall in love....tragically torn apart at the last moment. They are beautiful and well written, but definitely should come with a box of tissues with each purchase.

Say something...
