Middle Grade
Pages: 320 pages
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA Children's Books
Release Date: October 2, 2007

In the year 2140, it is illegal to be young.

Children are all but extinct.

The world is a better place.

Longevity drugs are a fountain of youth. Sign the Declaration, agree not to have children and you too can live forever. Refuse, and you will live as an outcast. For the children born outside the law, it only gets worse – Surplus status.

Not everyone thinks Longevity is a good thing, but you better be clear what side you’re on. . . . Surplus Anna is about to find out what happens when you can’t decide if you should cheat the law or cheat death.

The premise of this book was amazing! I had never thought of the consequences of wishing for an eternal life. Of course I'd want to live forever duh, right? Yet, this book will make you see it through an entirely different perspective. Every ingredient for great dystopia clashes with an awesome concept in this short read that will make you throughout thirsty for more. I'm so so glad this is a series, I cannot wait to read more.

I didn't even know this was Middle Grade until I had already read it. It feels just like YA. Why did I wait so long to read this? This is yet another dystopian must read. The characters were great even though the male character, Peter, was a little dull and uninteresting. Events may have been predictable and the ending slightly cheesy, but when writing is this good and plot is steady and keeps you glued to the pages, anything else is forgivable. Still gets 5 stars from me!
